Bringing RUNES to Rootstock: Empowering Developers with New Capabilities

The recently launched RUNES protocol on Bitcoin has enabled the development and issuance of MEME tokens, capturing significant interest following the Bitcoin halving. However, utilizing these assets on Bitcoin faces challenges due to Bitcoin’s scripting limitations. This is where Rootstock, the first and longest-lasting EVM-compatible Bitcoin sidechain, comes in to offer greater functionality for building a Runes-enabled DeFi application or community tool.

Rootstock combines the security and asset benefits of Bitcoin with the programmability of Ethereum, unlocking new possibilities for RUNES tokens.

Introducing the RUNES Developer Projects

To showcase the potential of RUNES on Rootstock, RootstockLabs is excited to launch a series of demonstration projects and reference implementations. These projects aim to provide developers with practical examples and starter code to build their own RUNES-related applications on Rootstock. These initiatives cover the entire lifecycle of RUNES tokens, from minting on Bitcoin to utilizing them in various forms on Rootstock.

  • RUNES Toy Bridge: The first project, the RUNES Toy Bridge, is already available on GitHub and demonstrates the complete process of working with RUNES tokens. This includes:
    • Minting RUNES on Bitcoin: Learn how to create RUNES tokens on the Bitcoin network.
    • Bridging to Rootstock: Discover the process of transferring these tokens to Rootstock.
    • Minting on Rootstock: Implement an ERC-1155 contract to mint corresponding assets on Rootstock.
    • Reverse Bridging: Understand how to bridge tokens back to Bitcoin, locking assets on Rootstock, and releasing them on Bitcoin.
  • RUNES Marketplace: The second project focuses on creating a RUNES Marketplace. Utilizing the Rootstock ecosystem integration, ThirdWeb, this project demonstrates how RUNES assets, once on Rootstock, can be traded seamlessly in a decentralized marketplace. This reference project provides a template for developers to help them build their own trading platforms.
  • RUNES Giveaway Engine: The third project, the RUNES Giveaway Engine, showcases how RUNES tokens, once available on Rootstock, can be distributed to a community or ecosystem based on specific criteria. This project will be implemented integrating capabilities from one of the ecosystem partners, Gelato, providing an automated and efficient way to incentivize and engage users.

Goals and Benefits

RootstockLabs’s goal with these projects is to inspire and equip the developer community with the tools and knowledge needed to utilize RUNES tokens on Rootstock. By providing detailed demonstrations, starter code, and reference implementations, the RootstockLabs team aims to:

  • Expand Existing Projects: Help existing projects and developers create RUNES-related marketplaces on an EVM-compatible network.
  • Grow RUNES Ecosystems: Enable RUNES projects to grow their audience and utility through innovative mechanisms.
  • Support New Developers: Offer an entry point for developers new to EVM development or RUNES-related projects.
  • Illustrate opportunities for innovation: Runes on Rootstock can be represented in a range of formats from ERC20, ERC720, or ERC1155.  Choosing different approaches can afford novel usage of these assets in their application on Rootstock.
